The Battle of Badr

The Battle of Badr
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
The battle of Badr was the most important among the Islamic battles of Destiny. For the first time the followers of the new faith were put into a serious test. Had victory been the lot of the pagan army while the Islamic Forces were still at the beginning of their developments, the faith of Islam could have come to an end.
No one was aware of the importance of the outcome of the Battle as the Prophet (S) himself. We might read the depth of his anxiety in his prayer before the beginning of the Battle when he stood up supplicating his Lord :
God this is Quraish. It has come with all its arrogance and boastfulness, trying to discredit Thy Apostle. God, I ask Thee to humiliate them tomorrow. God, if this Muslim band will perish today, Thou shall not be worshipped.
At this battle in which the pagan army consisted of 950 fighters and 314 (including the Messenger S), the Islamic defense was a combination of three defensive lines :
1. The personality of the Messenger, his leadership and his unequalled firmness. He (S) was to the Muslims the final refuge at Badr and at every battle he attended.
2. The Hashmites (the clan of the Prophet S), led by Ali Ibn Abu Talib (as)who entered this battle relatively obscure and came out with unequalled military fame. His military performances became the popular subject of the Arab caravans conversations throughout the Arabic Peninsula.
3. The hundreds of companions of the Messenger whose hearts were filled with the faith and readiness for sacrifice. Many of them viewed martyrdom to be a gain, equal to life and victory. These good companions were the army of Islam, its first line of defense and thick wall behind which the Messenger (S) used to stand. They were the attackers and the defenders.
As to the clan of the Messenger they were the ones that he used to call before any one else, to offer the heavy sacrifice. They used to stand in the first line of defense opening for the army the way through their thrusts in the line of the enemies. When the general offensives began and every companion participated, the clan of the Messenger (S) were the most damaging to the enemies. They were so at Badr and at the following battles.
The battle began when Utbah Ibn Rabi-ah, his son Al Walid and his brother Sheibah (all from the Ommayad) stood in front of the pagan army and asked the Prophet (S) to send to them their equals for a dual. Hundreds of companions were around him and many of them were expecting to be called upon by the Prophet (S) but he choose to start from his own family.
The load was heavy and the heavy load could be carried only by the people to whom it belonged as he called upon Ali, Al Hamza and Obeidah Al Harith (all from the clan of the Prophet) to face the three warriors. Ali destroyed Al Walid and Al Hamza killed Utbah; then they both assisted Obeidah against his opponent Sheibah. Sheibah died immediately and Obeidah was the first martyr at this battle. He died after he lost his leg.
When the general offensive began, hundreds of companions participated in the battle and offered sacrifices and pleased their Lord. But the members of the house of the Messenger (S) distinguished themselves. Ali's endeavour was unique at this battle. When Hanthala Ibn Abu Sufyan faced him, Ali liquefied his eyes with one blow from his sword. He annihilated Al Auss Ibn Saeed, and met Tuaima Ibn Oday and transfixed him with his spear, saying “You shall not dispute with us in God after today.”
The Messenger (S) took a handful of gravel when the battle was extremely heated. He threw it at the faces of the pagans saying “ May Your faces be disfigured. God, terrify their hearts and invalidated their feet. “ The pagans ran away, turning their faces to no one.
The Muslims went on killing them and taking prisoners. 70 pagans met their death, and the Muslims took from them 70 prisoners. History preserved in its records only fifth of the names out of the 70 pagan loses. Twenty or twenty two of them died at Ali's hand.
This battle laid the foundation of the Islamic State and made out of the Muslims a force to be reckoned with by the dwellers of the Arabic Peninsula.

Battle of Badr

             Battle of Badr
          ISLAMIC HISTORY
Battle of Badr, (624 CE), in Islamic history, first military victory of the Prophet Muhammad . It seriously damaged Meccan prestige while strengthening the political position of Muslims in Medina and establishing Islam as a viable force in the Arabian Peninsula . The rise of Islam against the Pagan tribes of Mecca was a vital development in military history, as well as in the history of religion and society. The Prophet Muhammad was a skilled war leader as well as the founder of a faith, and at Badr his religion was spread by the sword.
The Battle of Badr was a key moment in Muhammad’s armed struggle against Mecca’s pagan tribes. In 622 Muhammad and his followers had emigrated from Mecca to Medina. From his new base Muhammad began raiding Meccan caravan routes. This provoked the Meccan tribes into sending an army to confront Muhammad’s Muslims. When word of a particularly wealthy caravan escorted by Abลซ Sufyฤn, head of the Umayyad clan, reached Muhammad, a raiding party of about 300 Muslims, to be led by Muhammad himself, was organized. By filling the wells on the caravan route near Medina with sand, the Muslims lured Abลซ Sufyฤn’s army to battle at Badr, near Medina, in March 624.
The battle proper started with an exchange of volleys of arrows, resulting in heavier casualties being suffered by the Meccan army. Muhammad gave the order to charge, throwing stones at his enemies in a traditional Arabic gesture. The Koran states that the Meccan lines broke under the force of Muhammad’s attack and speaks of angels descending from
heaven to slay the fleeing enemy. A number of important Meccan leaders were among those killed, including Muhammad’s main rival, Amr ibn Hisham. The armies involved were not large: fewer than 400 Muslims and around 1,000 Meccan fighters. Despite the superior numbers of the Meccan forces (about 1,000 men), the Muslims scored a complete victory.
The victory at Badr was an important milestone in the establishment of Islam. It was even recorded in the Qurสพฤn as a divine sanction of the new religion: "It was not you who slew them, it was God…in order that He might test the Believers by a gracious trial from Himself" (8:17). Those Muslims who fought at Badr became known as the badrฤซyลซn and make up one group of the
Companions of the Prophet .
The victory especially raised Muhammad’s status among the Medina tribes that supported him and convinced his followers that victory over powerful and wealthy Mecca was truly possible. The victory was not destined to be swift, but by 630 Muhammad was able to march into Mecca as a conqueror.
Losses: Meccan, 100; Muslim, fewer than 20.

A Short Biography of Aish the Mother of the Believer [Learn Tajweed with UQA]

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim
Mother of the Believers, a scholar among the best of The Companions, she was unique in every aspect. She conveyed from the Prophet many hadiths which couldn’t have been conveyed by other Sahaba because none of the male muhaddiths among them had known the Prophet so intimately. She was the most beloved person to the Prophet. Let us have a glimpse at the life of this amazing person.
Aisha bint Abi Bakr was born in the year 614 CE. Her father was the most beloved Companion of the Messenger ๏ทบ, Abu Bakr Siddique (radiyallahu anhu), and her mother was Umm Roman (radiyallahu anha). Despite being born in a Makkah which was yet to accept Islam, she was a born Muslim, and she grew up in a home environment free from the touches of
jahiliyah (ignorance of divine guidance).
From childhood she manifested signs of intelligence and a keenness for knowledge-seeking, as shown by the following incident:
One day the Prophet ๏ทบ came to visit Abu Bakr and found the five-year-old Aisha playing with a toy horse that had wings on it. The Prophet ๏ทบ asked her what it was, and she replied it was a horse. The Prophet said smilingly that horses did not have wings. She replied that Sulaiman (alaihi salam) had horses that were winged.
Az Zuhri said of her, “If ‘Aishah’s knowledge is compiled and compared to the knowledge of all women, her knowledge will surely excel theirs.”
Aisha was shown in divine revelation to the Prophet in the form of dreams. The Messenger said to Aisha, “You have been shown to me in (my) dreams on three nights. An angel was carrying you in a silken cloth and said to me, ‘This is your wife.’ And when I uncovered it; behold, it was you. I then said, ‘If this dream is from Allah, He will cause it to come true.’
And the dream did come true by Allah’s will. The proposal was taken to the parents of Aisha by Khalwah bin Hakeem (radiyallahu anha), and since Aisha had not yet reached adulthood, she was engaged to the Messenger ๏ทบ , the only virgin among the Prophet’s wives.
When the migration from Makkah to Madinah took place she was eight, and she later narrated its minute details, which she remembered many years later. It was this amazing strength of memory which enabled her to narrate thousands of hadith of the Prophet ๏ทบ .
When she became nine years of age, her marriage with the Prophet was consummated, and she entered into her apartment which was going to be honoured to become the burial place of the Messenger of Allah and the first two of the Righteous Caliphs. It was a six feet wide room with earthen walls and roof of leaves and twigs. Her furniture consisted of a mat, a thin mattress, a pillow filled with tree barks, a water-bag, a plate of dates and a water glass.
She was the youngest and the most beloved among the wives of the Prophet ๏ทบ , and he used to play with her and tell her stories.
Narrated Amr bin Al-As: I came to the Prophet SAW and said, “Who is the most beloved person to you?” He said, “Aisha.” I asked, “Among the men?” He said, “Her father.”
The Prophet ๏ทบ used to receive revelations while in the apartment of Aishah. He said to the Mothers of the Believers on one occasion, ‘ . . . by Allah, the Divine Inspiration never came to me while I was under the blanket of any woman amongst you except her (Aishah).”
There are several occasions of ayaat of the Quran being revealed because of Aisha. One of them was when she was maliciously accused of adultery by the hypocrites. Allah revealed verses 11 to 21 of surat an Nur on her defense. Another such occasion was the revelation of the verse of tayammum of surat an Nisa verse 43.
Aishah saw the angel Jibreel (alaihi salam) personally. On one occasion, she saw the Prophet talking to a horse rider. She saw who it was, and the Prophet said it was Jibreel in the form of a human, and that he requested that his greetings be conveyed to her.
The Prophet spent the last few days of his blessed life in Aisha’s apartment, and died in her lap. He was buried in her apartment, which is still the only remaining room among the Prophet’s household.
Aisha continued teaching Islam and narrating hadiths throughout her life. She was the fourth topmost narrator of hadith and narrated a total of 22102 ahadith. Several of the best chains of narration go back to her, among them Ubaydullah ibn Umar from Qasim from Aishah, which is considered a golden chain.
Three of her students received hadiths from her in written form: Mu’awiyah, Urwah ibn Zubair and Zayd ibn Abi Sufyan (radiyallahu ‘anhum ajma’in).
Whether she knew how to write or dictated to scribes is not clear, but it is certain that she knew how to read.
She transmitted two of the Prophet’s letters.
Al Hakim mentions in al-Mustadrak, “One-fourth of the rule of Shariah was narrated on the authority of Aishah.”
Abu Moosa al-Ash’ari said, “Whenever a hadith was unclear to us (the Comapnions), and we asked Aishah about it, we always gained knowledge about that hadith from her.”6
She was an authority in fiqh (the philosophy of Islamic law). During the Caliphates of the four Rightoeus Caliphs, her fataawah were accepted.
Other senior Comapanions consulted her in the finer points of Shariah. Masrooq ibn al-Ajda said, “I was the elders among the Companions of Muhammad asking her about the law of inheritance.” 1
Aishah died at the age of 66, on Tuesday 17th of Ramadan, 58 AH. Her funeral prayer was lead by Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). She was buried in Jannatul Baqi’. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun.
